In November 2013 a striking new mural was painted in Morecambe’s iconic art deco Midland hotel. The painting, by artist Jonquil Cook, is a homage to the Midland’s lost mural, by the acclaimed artist Eric Ravilious.

In the spring of 1933, not long before completion of the Midland Hotel, the renowned water-colourist, Eric Ravilious, and his wife, Tirzah Garwood, installed themselves in lodgings at Heysham, near Morecambe. or decoration by Eric Gill the hotel has a rich heritage. The Midland has allegedly been a favourite haunt of celebrities such as Coco Chanel, Sir Lawrence Olivier and Noel Coward which only adds to its illustrious history and air of seaside glamour.
The Grade II listed 1930’s art deco masterpiece that is the Midland Hotel, Morecambe, is heralding its landmark year and Wayne and Gerardine Hemingway’s Vintage Festival is having a holiday in Morecambe to help those celebrations along.
Leading designer Wayne Hemingway, who was born and raised in Morecambe, said: “The Midland is a very special building – a truly unique design and iconic British building. It feels right and proper for us to bring a “pop up” version of our Vintage Festival to my hometown to celebrate The Midland’s landmark year and put on a wonderful party that encompasses the best of British design, music, fashion and art, and food
“We can’t wait to put on a great show for everyone who comes along. There will be lots for people to see and take part in, besides the two main ticketed events. For those not fortunate (or quick enough!) to get tickets or one of the room packages for the Vintage Tea Dance and the Torch Club evening ball there will be workshops , food and the Vintage Marketplace. We hope that people will really get into the Vintage spirit and dress up for the occasion for a fabulous summer’s day at the seaside.”

Vintage Festivals have attracted tens of thousands of guests at celebrations on London’s South Bank, in Sussex and also at last year’s Preston Guild. They are events that have something for all ages and the 14th September is sure to live long in the memory of Morecambe.
