Waterhead gin of the month, Schwarzwald Monkey 47, is about a friendship between two men brought together by their passion to discover the ultimate Dry Gin taste.
Kissed by the Monkey
Alexander Stein had a successful career in the automotive industry and lived in the USA with his wife and two children. One evening in a conversation with a friend from back home in the Black Forest he heard a tale that changed the course of his life forever. The story was about a British military officer, Montgomery Collins, who had married into an inn keeping family in the central Black Forest, and got together with a local distiller to create a gin for himself and the guests at his restaurant. This was what Alexander describes as being ‘kissed by the monkey’, a moment of clarity when he knew that his life’s work was now to bring this gin back to life. The successful career in USA was rolled up and the family moved home to the Black Forest.
A Distiller with a Passion
Christoph Keller’s career as a schnapps distiller was already established. That’s not what he set out to be; as a young man he was an artist and knew practically nothing about distilling alcohol. It started as a hobby, became a passion and developed into a career. He says,
Sometimes in life, new paths open up ahead, and one needs only to follow them in order to find along the way something like self-fulfillment, or even a calling. That’s the way it was with me, at least … and today, I am a distiller with a passion, and practically fanatical when it comes to the pursuit of distilled aromas.
A series of events brought these two men face to face, and it wasn’t long before Alexander was sharing his preposterous dream.
Christoph, affectionately named ‘King Louis’ from Jungle Book renown, recalls that they didn’t set out to create a ‘brand’, but rather just a really good gin. We set out to produce aromas, not alcohol. We have followed age-old traditions in the learning of our craft, and we immerse ourselves every day in the finer points of the honorable art of distillation.
Bottled at 47% and as the name suggests in Monkey 47, it is distilled from 47 predominantly unusual but regional botanicals such as lingonberries, jasmine, ginger mixed with some more distinct flavor’s like juniper and angelica makes Monkey 47 a gin with plenty to taste and spices to enjoy.
