Our Master of Malt, George, stays on Islay for the second month in a row and samples his personal favourite Malt – Bunnahabhain.
This is the whisky that got me started on my journey of discovery within the industry. It has changed slightly over the years as it’s now un-chill filtered and bottled at 46.3% ABV, which I think makes it even more enjoyable.
A Simple Beginning
Since 1881, Bunnahabhain’s unpretentious malt has started with good quality malted barley, clean pure Margadale spring water and a little yeast. All good whisky starts in the same way, but the distinction is in the detail. The fine malted barley is not heavily peated which adds to its gentle nature. The clear natural spring water source has been running clear for over 100 years and the sea facing warehouses provide the perfect spot for the maturation process.
Each oak cask is individually inspected and any found to be imperfect are discarded and dismantled.
Bunnahabhin hibernates for twelve long years before being transferred to bottles. The colour, nose, flavour and consistency will be made up from several different casks, the marriage of the different characteristics being the responsibility of Master Distiller, Ian MacMillan.
12 Year Old
Presented in a quality black gift carton with it’s own booklet, the distinctive bottle is smoked oak in colour with dual labelling – the perfect gift.
NOSE: Offers a fresh and aromatic experience with a subtle whiff of smoke floating through the air.
PALATE: The taste starts with a light fruit and nut appeal that leads to a spectacular malty sweetness.
FINISH: A beautifully rich full-bodied, lingering experience.
