The Wild Boar’s Master of Malt, George Hutton, goes further afield to share with us his ‘Malt of the Month’. Japan may not be the first country that springs to mind when thinking about whisky, but they are in fact well regarded in the whisky world.
Suntory have been making whisky since 1923, when Shinjiro Torii “Father of Japanese Whisky” built Japan’s first whisky distillery South West of Kyoto in the vale of Yamazaki (hence the name). The Japanese are known to be great mimics when it comes to producing saleable goods, but to be honest this is not a copy of Scotch whisky, this stands up in its own right and is highly regarded in the world of whisky.
Yamazaki 12 Year Old
I first tried Yamazaki 12 year old in May 2013 at a Whisky Club night at The Wild Boar. I was surprised at how light and floral the bouquet was on the nose. It was refreshing to be able to try whiskies that were not Scottish. Why not come along to our next whisky night on 10th June and try for yourself. This 12 year old from Yamazaki first came onto the market in 1984 and was the first seriously marketed Japanese single malt whisky.
Nose: good body with plenty of nut oils and zest, a pleasant floral character with a little tropical fruit and a rooty note. Palate: smooth and soft with good sweetness and winter spice. A lovely citrus note develops with more tropical fruit notes and a little rum. Finish: is medium with fruit and zest. More next month when we start the Malt of the Month.
