Last month we introduced The Wild Boar’s Master of Malt, George Hutton, who promised a regular ‘Malt of the Month’. He starts our whisky journey in Tobermory on the island of Mull.

Tobermory distillery is the only distillery on the island of Mull, which is off the West coast of Scotland between Skye and Islay. If you ever get round to that Scottish island hopping tour that you dream of, don’t overlook Mull, it should definitely be on the list!
Tobermory 10 Year Old Whisky
Tobermory distillery has rebranded and redeveloped their malts over the last ten years. Tobermory 10yo is a great find and is one of the smoothest single malts that I have tasted in a long time. Unchill-filtered and bottled at 46.3% ABV with no added colour, Tobermory 10yo is quite a complex, but, well balanced malt.

I tried this for the first time on a trip to Oban & Tobermory Distilleries in June 2013, and what a surprise. This is a malt for spring which reminds me of a bracing coastal walk with the freshness of a sea breeze. A perfect dram when relaxing at home on a lovely spring evening, with some dark chocolate.
This is not a malt for those beginning their whisky journey, but do take the time to try and savour the nuances of this great island whisky.
Tasting notes
Nose: Rich island character with tantalising hints of grass, malt, gingerbread, stewed fruit syrup and finely polished oak, with a hint of fresh sea air
Palate: Smooth, velvety with fruity tangs and exquisitely spiced gingerbread and aniseed for a medium sweetness to treasure.
Finish: Ginger and spicy oak, matched with bitter chocolate and almond that gently fades with a tail of sweet salty seas.
