It seems appropriate that on World Toilet Day, Howard from our Maintenance Department is hanging photographs of 16 toilets from around the globe in our ladies and gents toilets within the English Lakes family of hotels.

Several months ago Dan from Low Wood Bay Watersports Centre brought this fantastic Tearfund and Cord initiative to our attention. The concept is simple – for a one-off specified donation which pays for the construction of a toilet in a developing county, you receive a photograph of your twinned toilet to display in the comfortable surroundings of your western loo. Much more than that, you have the knowledge that a simple gift has done something to help the problem of the 2.6 billion people world wide, that’s 40% of the earth’s population, that do not have access to somewhere safe, private or hygienic to go to the toilet.
Obviously the human and economic impact of statistics like these is huge. Every 20 seconds a child dies from diarrheal diseases and 60% of all rural diseases are caused by poor hygiene and sanitation. Toilettwinning.org says, “Your twinned toilet is helping to flush away poverty!”
English Lakes has therefore hung their 16 certificates with the hope that through our donations, the lives of real people from around the world will be helped in some small but significant way.
