On Sunday 14th July Low Wood Bay will be hosting an afternoon of music from the award winning Amabile Girls Choir. Proceeds from the event are to go to their chosen charity, Barnardos.

Only a few of days before (on 10th July), Amabile will be competing at the International Eisteddfod in Llangollen, Wales, so we thought we would follow their progress and preparation over the next couple of months through this blog.

The Choir

Based in Kendal, the choir is made up of girls from the age of 13 up to 19 from all over the South Lakes. They were formed in 1996 and since then have enjoyed national and international success including BBC Radio 3 choir of the year in 2006. In October 2012 they were awarded first prize in the Youth Choir Category at the North Wales Choral Festival and more recently won the youth division of the 2013 Manchester Amateur Choral Competition. Their artistic director is Rachel Little.

Supporting Barnardos

In January of this year , the choir was left reeling when they lost one of their girls. Helena Farrell had sung with Amabile for over seven years and was a popular and much loved friend and member of the choir. As the girls in Amabile and also many other young people in Kendal struggled (and in many cases still continue to struggle) to make sense of what had happened, Barnados were approached by many to provide support and advice. Teenage mental health issues historically have been a subject that people are reluctant to speak openly about however many young people have felt the need for help, advice or just to have someone to talk to.

Proceeds from the event will be donated to Barnados North West.
