The countdown has started for the largest European open water swimming event when 10,000 people will be taking to the waters of Lake Windermere during the Great North Swim between 14th and 16th June. The Great North Swim is the flagship event in Great Swim Series and in four years has grown from 3,000 swimmers in one day to around 10,000 swimmers taking part over three days.
Some of the world’s best open water swimmers have said that the Great North Swim in Windermere ranked among their favourite races worldwide. Now there’s an opportunity for us mere mortals to meet the elite on the lawns of Low Wood Bay in the informal setting of a barbeque with entertainment from Burneside Brass Band. The event will take place on Friday 14th June from 6:30pm.
The guest list is a veritable who’s who of open water swimming…
A silver medalist at the 2012 Olympics competing in the 10K Marathon Swim. Thomas is considered to be one of the best contemporary open water swimmers in the world. He is coached by his older brother, Stefan, and has 25 international podium finishes to his name. In 2011 and 2012 Thomas was nominated for the World Open Water Swimming Man of the Year.
The youngest elite swimmer attending is UK’s own Caleb Hughes who has been selected for the British swimming team for the European Junior Championships to be held in Poznan, Poland in July 2013. Mark Perry, interim technical lead for British Swimming, who leads the development programme said “we are taking a smaller, more medal focussed group who we believe have the potential to make the team for Rio 2016 and beyond.” One month prior to the European Championships, the Great North Swim provides the perfect warm up competition for Caleb.
Many More Elite Swimmers…
Other competitors include Chrstian Reichert, currently ranked 7th in the world, Nadine Reichert and Isabelle Harle, ranked 5th and 6th in the world respectively, Beatrix Eisel who was 4th in the 2012 Waikkiki Rough Water swim, the largest open water sea swim in the world.
